31 (Baskin Robbins)
Say one, two or three numbers in turn – whoever has to say 31 drinks. The Korean counting game sounds simple and is still devious.
How do you play 31 (Baskin Robbins)?
The game is named after an ice cream chain’s “31 flavours”, though the company has nothing to do with it. In Korea it’s one of the best-known drinking games.
Sit in a circle and count upwards from 1 in turn. On your turn you say one, two or three consecutive numbers. If the first player says “1, 2, 3”, the next can say “4”, “4, 5” or “4, 5, 6”.
Whoever is forced to say 31 loses and drinks. The next round starts again at 1, begun by the loser.
Variations
- Elimination: whoever says 31 is out, until one player is left.
- Different target: with 51 or 41 the rounds last longer.
- Secret alliances: two players team up to trap a third.
Tip for two players
With two players, whoever says 30 wins. You get there by always stopping on a number that leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 4: 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30. With three or more players there’s no sure-fire trick.
Agree on drinks and amounts before you start. The game works just as well without alcohol.
