Crate Race (Kastenlauf)

Two people, one crate, one route: in the German Kastenlauf the fastest team with an empty crate wins.

How to play

In a crate race, teams of two compete against each other. Each team gets a crate of drinks and has to walk a route agreed in advance.

The team that reaches the finish first with an empty crate wins. Spilling or leaving drinks behind earns a time penalty.

How to make it good

  • Plan a route with rest stops and toilets.
  • Use small bottles or alcohol-free drinks – a crate of water or soda works just as well.
  • A sober team can act as marshals and keep time.

Warning: Stick to footpaths away from roads. Take breaks, drink water in between, use small or alcohol-free drinks and respect local bans on drinking in public.

Agree on drinks and amounts before you start. The game works just as well without alcohol.
