Nunchi Game

Everyone counts up together, but in no set order. Call a number at the same time as someone else, or be the last one left, and you drink.

Also known as: Noonchi game

How do you play Nunchi Game?

In the Nunchi game, the whole group counts up from 1 together until everyone has called out exactly one number. There’s no order: anyone can call the next number at any moment. If two people call the same number at the same time, both drink – and whoever is left at the end without having called a number drinks too.

The name comes from the Korean word nunchi (눈치), the knack of sensing what other people are thinking and about to do. That’s exactly what you need here: you have to read who’s about to jump in next. No equipment needed, just a group that can see each other.

Someone gives the signal, and then anyone can call “one”. Then comes “two”, “three” and so on until everyone’s had a turn. No planning, no hand signals, no nodding – it’s all about timing.

  • One number each: everyone calls exactly once per round. Once you’ve said your number, you’re safe for that round.
  • Collision: if two or more people call the same number at the same moment, everyone involved takes a sip. The round then starts again from 1.
  • Last one standing: whoever hesitates too long and ends up alone has to say the final number and drinks.

Variations

  • Stand up: jump out of your chair as you call your number. That way everyone can see who’s already gone – and nobody can deny a collision.
  • Collisions only: drop the last-player rule and only drink for simultaneous calls. If the group makes it to the end without a mistake, everyone raises a glass together.
  • Fighting version: when several people call at once, they have to pair up and high-five as fast as they can while shouting “Fighting!”. Whoever is left without a high-five partner drinks.

Tips

It gets really tense from about six players, and with 15 it’s close to impossible. Calling early gets you out of the way but risks the first collision – waiting too long lands you on the last number. It makes a great icebreaker because nobody gets put on the spot and everyone’s laughing straight away.

Warning: One small sip per mistake is plenty – rounds only take seconds, so it adds up fast. The game works just as well with water or soda.

Agree on drinks and amounts before you start. The game works just as well without alcohol.
