Mario Kart Drinking Game

You only drink after the race: finish last, get hit by a shell or fall off the track and you collect sips. Works with any version of Mario Kart.

Also known as: Drunk Mario Kart

How do you play Mario Kart Drinking Game?

You race each other in Mario Kart, ideally in Grand Prix mode with four tracks in a row. During the race, both hands stay on the controller and the glasses stay on the table. Everyone keeps track of what happened to them, and once you cross the finish line, the sips are due in the break before the next race. Whoever wins a race also hands out two sips.

Up to four people can race at once on one console. If there are more of you, whoever finishes last swaps with someone watching after each race. Whoever is watching keeps an eye on the rules and counts along.

One sip when …

  • you get hit by a green or red shell.
  • you slip on a banana.
  • you fall off the track and get put back on.
  • lightning shrinks you.
  • a squid splatters ink across your view.
  • you mess up the rocket start and stall.
  • you drive the wrong way and the game tells you so.
  • you waste an item, like firing a shell straight into a wall.
  • you get overtaken on the final lap.

Two sips when …

  • the spiny blue shell gets you.
  • you finish last among the human players.
  • you fall off Rainbow Road.
  • you lose first place on the final lap.

Finish your glass (or three sips) when …

  • you end a whole Grand Prix last among the human players.

Variations

  • Light version: only drink by placing – whoever finishes last among the human players takes a sip, all other rules are dropped.
  • Alcohol-free version: play with lemonade, water or alcohol-free beer – or collect penalty points. Whoever has the most after the Grand Prix fetches the next round of snacks.
  • Teams: with four players, race in two teams. The sips go to the team with the worse combined placing and are shared.
  • Balloon battle: in battle mode, every balloon you lose costs a sip, paid after the round.

Tips

With lots of items and a high speed class, sips add up fast – drop a few of the one-sip rules. A Grand Prix takes about ten minutes, so take a short break with some water afterwards.

Warning: Nobody drinks during a race – sips are only taken in the break between races. Small sips only, alcohol-free is fine, no shots.

Agree on drinks and amounts before you start. The game works just as well without alcohol.
