Titanic

An empty shot glass floats in a glass of beer and everyone takes turns pouring – whoever sinks it drinks the glass. The Korean game of nerves.

How do you play Titanic?

Fill a large glass about halfway with beer. Carefully set an empty shot glass on top so that it floats – that’s your Titanic.

Taking turns, everyone pours a little of a second drink into the floating shot glass. In Korea that’s soju, but any other drink works just as well. Each player decides how much to pour: a tiny drop or a brave splash.

With every turn the shot glass sits lower in the glass. Whoever makes it sink loses and drinks what’s in the large glass.

Variations

  • Quick start: pre-fill the shot glass until it’s close to tipping before the first turn – then it’s all on the line after a few pours.
  • Non-alcoholic: water in the big glass, juice for pouring. The thrill stays exactly the same.
  • Small version: use a normal water glass instead of a beer glass – less for the loser.

Tips

Pour from a bottle with a narrow neck so you can control the amount better. In Korea the game is also called “jamsuham”, which means submarine.

Warning: Fill the big glass only halfway and let the loser drink it slowly instead of chugging. Water or soda works fine for pouring.

Agree on drinks and amounts before you start. The game works just as well without alcohol.
